Distance from a step count depends on one thing this calculator has to estimate: how long each step is. We use a height-based approximation (about 0.41 times height for walking, a bit more for jogging or running) since a taller stride covers more ground per step.

Stride estimates use the same 0.413 / 0.45 / 0.5 height multipliers the calculator applies above; steps per mile is 63,360 inches divided by stride length.
Most adults land somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 steps per mile, which is why that range gets quoted so often as a rule of thumb. Your own number depends on height and pace, which is the whole reason a calculator beats a flat conversion factor: a 6-foot runner and a 5-foot walker covering the same 10,000 steps are not covering the same distance.
If you split the day between walking and running, run each segment through the calculator separately with the matching pace setting, then add the two distances together; mixing paces into one average stride tends to overstate the mileage from the walking portion and understate the running portion.
Because stride length scales with height. Two people can each take 10,000 steps and cover different distances, since a taller person's stride is typically longer.
No, it's a rougher shortcut based only on step count, about 0.04 calories per step, meant for a quick daily estimate. The calories burned calculator uses MET values and is more precise for a specific activity and duration.
Somewhat. Jogging and running strides run longer than a walking stride at the same height, which is why the pace selector adjusts the multiplier used to estimate stride length.
Trackers often calibrate stride length from your actual walking pattern over time, while this tool uses a height-based estimate. Both are approximations; a tracker that's learned your stride will usually be closer.
